A committee met for the first time this week to determine new boundaries for elementary students in preparation for the fall 2021 opening of Sparta Elementary. The committee’s first meeting was Monday, with a second meeting on tap for Monday, Oct. 5.

At the Brandon Valley Board of Education’s Sept. 14 meeting, Superintendent Dr. Jarod Larson stressed that the committee, in their decision-making process, will consider minimizing student impact, while proactively managing student growth and establishing boundaries for the district’s future growth.

Sparta Elementary is located at 3401 S. Sparta Ave. (the corner of Sparta Avenue and 41st Street) in Sioux Falls. Due to the school’s location and the current capacity at Fred Assam Elementary, boundary lines and student population in that area are expected to undergo the biggest change.

BV’s Elementary School Boundary Line Committee consists of parent representatives from the district’s five elementary schools and district faculty. The parent reps were recommended by building principals.

“We will have a couple of committee meetings to work through the current boundary lines, what we believe are a starting point for the boundary changes and then ultimately a big vision of BV Vision 2040 and how those boundaries will look when we have all those elementary schools,” Larson said.

The district also owns land for two additional elementary schools. One parcel is located on the west side of Highway 100 and the other is on the east side of Brandon off of Redwood Boulevard.

Larson plans to attend the Oct. 6 Fred Assam Elementary PTA meeting.

“Quite frankly, this change will have a substantial change on FAE in a far greater way than any other elementary school,” he said. “To be very frank, that school will see 95 percent of the impact in terms of how the boundary line is impacted. All of the other school boundaries will see very little impact.”

An informational for families is planned for Oct. 15 and the school board will consider the new boundary lines for approval at their Nov. 9 meeting.
