City passes drainage law, permit fee

Staff report
Brandon City Council established protocol for residents to use the city’s sanitary sewer system at its Feb. 4 meeting and a fine for those who fail to comply.
At its second reading, the council approved Ordinance 575 – Clear Water Connections – amending a previous ordinance to prohibit discharging into the public sanitary sewer without a city permit and setting a $500 fine for doing so.
The council also approved Resolution 6-19, setting a $25 fee for the sewer permit, which is valid Nov. 1 through March 31.
Residents who obtain permits from City Hall are allowed to drain into the city’s sanitary sewer system.
Public works superintendent Rollie Hoeke presented the winter sump pump connection policy at a November council meeting and notified approximately one dozen residents who were impacted.
The permit helps keep sewer drainage off the streets, Hoeke said, which reduces liability, wear and tear on streets and employee time.
