Chad Alan Garrow, 55

Chad Alan Garrow, 55, of Brandon, S.D., passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, Jan. 21, 2022. 

A Celebration of Life Service will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 30, 2022 at the Brandon Valley High School Activity Center. Visitation with family present will be from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2022 at the Brandon Valley Assembly of God Church. Chad’s family request casual attire (red and black) to be worn for his visitation and service. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation in Chad’s name for the enhancement of Brandon Valley Athletic Outdoor Stadium. Chad was born Jan. 1, 1967 in Sioux Falls to Lowell and Sherrlyn Garrow. He was baptized at McKennan Hospital soon after birth and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church at age 14. He spent his youth camping, fishing, and playing football, fastpitch softball, basketball, and track. In 1985, Chad graduated from Sioux Falls Washington High School.

Chad attended the University of Sioux Falls, where he played football under Coach Bob Young and met the love of his life, Melissa Young. On March 6, 1992, Chad and Melissa were united in marriage. They were blessed with three children: AJ, Savannah, and Alicia. Chad was immensely proud of his kids and supported them in all aspects of their lives. In his free time, he coached softball, tailgated, and ate burgers. Chad was also dedicated to smoking food on the Traeger and off-roading in his Jeep with the Brandon “Jeep Creeps.” 

Chad’s coaching career began in 1994 with USF. He helped win the NAIA National Championship in ‘96 and was promoted to defensive coordinator in ’97 for two seasons. In ‘99, Chad became defensive coordinator and educator at Brandon Valley High School, later being named head football coach in ‘05. Chad is Brandon Valley’s winningest football coach with 14 ESD Conference titles, state runner-up three times, and won state titles in 2018 and 2020. He was named the Region Five South Dakota Coach of the Year and was inducted into the Brandon Valley and SD Football Coaches Hall of Fame. Garrow was also head track and field coach from 2000-04, then stepped down to assistant in 2005. He was a part of 11 ESD boys and girls titles, four Metro girls titles, five runner-up state titles, and one girls title in 2018.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Melissa; children, AJ (Molly) Garrow, Savannah (Alec) Blonquist, and Alicia Garrow; mother, Sherrlyn Garrow; brother, Eric; father-in-law, Bob Young; siblings-in-law, Lisa Garrow, Dave (Georgina) Young, Steve (Pam) Young, and Jeri (Larry) Fox; and his nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lowell Garrow; and mother-in-law, Diane Young.
