The Lady Lynx dance team may just be that good.

Despite five dance team members absent from the floor of Saturday’s Brookings Invite due to close contact quarantine, Brandon Valley pulled off their third consecutive grand champion title.

“We went into the competition with ‘We don’t know what it’s going to look like for the rest of the season,’ and they still blew it out of the water,” said dance coach Ashley Hoffman. “I was so impressed with them. Watching them come together this week and be accountable and not losing hope with five out, which is a drastic change, we revamped all of our routines in four days.”

The Lady Lynx presented themselves Saturday as if nothing had happened.

“They learned this week to overcome any obstacle that comes in their way,” said Hoffman, who had considered pulling her team from the invite. “But the fact that we were still able to dance five girls down, revamp our routines and still come out on top, is amazing.”

BV’s grand champion honor was manufactured out of their division wins. In jazz, the judges awarded BV 385 points to best six other programs. The Lady Lynx pom routine garnered a score of 382, also the top score of the nine competing teams.

BV’s grand champion score of 383.5 well-surpassed runner-up Sioux Falls Washington, who generated a 347.25.

“It’s a dramatic point difference for sure and a fun day,” Hoffman noted. “The girls have been working so hard, and I was happy to see their hard work being recognized by everyone.”

Hoffman said the bulk of the five team members who had to sit out Saturday and Tuesday’s Huron Invite, are expected to return for the Harrisburg Invite this Saturday.

“Things change at the drop of a hat,” Hoffman said. “So, it’s another week of up in the air. I hate to use that word, but it really is. We just have to be flexible to be able to jump into new spots.”

BV’s competitive cheer team placed seventh in the 16-team competition.

The cheer and dance teams compete twice this week.

On Tuesday, they traveled to the Huron Invite and beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, BV will compete in the Harrisburg Invite.
