The Lady Lynx dance team simply can’t be beat.

And once again, Brandon Valley’s high steppers landed grand champion honors, and this time they did it before an enthusiastic hometown crowd at the Oct. 6 BV Invite.

“It was definitely fun to be on our home floor,” said Lynx head coach Ashley Hoffman.

Although BV has won seven straight grand champion honors, Hoffman said last week’s was just a little bit more special.

“The biggest difference honestly was having the crowd support,” she said. “It was larger than normal because of the student body and the girls feed off the energy of that. The fact that they were able to do that (win grand champion) is really special for them and as we get to the end, every win is not just a win anymore, as we come closer to competing for the state title.”

The Lynx dancers were the clear winners behind their first-place finishes in both jazz and pom. BV registered a 369.5 for their jazz routine and 364 in pom, averaging out to a 366.75 tally.
The Lynx bested runner-up Harrisburg by 22 points.

BV’s cheer team also had the hometown fans on their feet Tuesday night, and their enthusiastic performance generated a 221.50 score from the judges. Roosevelt edged Harrisburg by seven points to win the team title, followed by Sioux Valley and fourth-place BV.

The Lynx cheer came away from Saturday’s Mitchell Invitational with a third-place finish. Coach Katee Lane said her team improved their performance score and made significant gains in the partner stunt sequence.

“Unfortunately, between a technical difficulty with music and other safety deductions, the overall score put the team in third place,” she said. “With only major competitions left in the season, it will be crucial to clean up each section of the routine and bring a little extra creativity and difficulty to the mat.”

Both squads enter the final stretch of their 2020 season this week. On Monday, the teams competed for the Metro Championships at the Sanford Pentagon and Thursday they will travel to Pierre to vie for their respective Eastern South Dakota Conference titles. The state meet is on tap for Oct. 24 at Rapid City.
