The Lady Lynx took advantage of 34 Bobcat turnovers Thursday, and the result was an impressive 64-31 ESD Conference victory.
BV coach Mike Zerr said his team took a step forward in the victory.
“We’re a team continuing to find its identity, and we took a step forward in that regard. It was great to see girls getting in and contributing with everyone scoring and making a direct impact on the game in that way,” he said. “Anytime you can get 20-plus steals and 34 turnovers in a game, that’s a great defensive effort.”
The Bobcats took an early 9-3 lead in the first three minutes, but then the Lady Lynx took charge, rallying to a 17-13 lead after a quarter and a 32-21 edge at the break.
BV turned up their pressure defense in the third stanza, causing the Bobcats issues. In that quarter alone, Brookings committed 11 of their 34 turnovers. Meanwhile, BV’s offense pushed the margin to 49-27.
The Lynx out-scored their hosts 15-4 in the final quarter en route to the 64-31 win.
Lady Lynx senior Mara Schaap had a good night from the perimeter. Schaap, who finished with a team-high 15 points, dropped 3-of-5 from long range. She got help from Hilary Behrens, who added 13 points and eight from Emma Jarovski. Kylie Foss chipped in five.
BV’s rebounding efforts were led by Hilary Behrens, who had five, and Foss, who had four. Sidney Thue and Schaap both aided with three.
Foss was also a factor in BV’s assist and steal stats. She dished out four of the team’s 12 assists, and picked off four of 23 total steals. Jarovski matched her four steals and had three assists. Hilary Behrens and Grace Gerken picked off six and three steals, respectively.
BV took good care of the ball, turning it over on just seven occasions.
For Brookings, Ainsley Shelsta came off the bench and posted a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds.
The Bobcats shot 26.2 percent from the field. They registered 34 rebounds, 10 steals, five assists and had 18 turnovers.
Zerr said his team shines when they push the flow of the game.
“Our girls are really comfortable in those situations and it allows us to play at a pace that is faster and hopefully creates a few more opportunities on offense for us. Especially with our bench, we can afford to get out early and push teams and hopefully get to their legs in the second half. That showed with us only allowing 10 points in the second half,” he said.
