There’s no place like home.
And for the Lady Lynx, playing in the comforts of their home gym on Saturday, the comforts of home resulted in a 58-38 win over the Watertown Arrows (0-3).
While Thursday’s season opener at the Sanford Pentagon Throwback Classic was a bit ragged at times, Coach Mark Stadem said his team played a much better game on the offensive end in this one.
“When we are sharing the ball, really moving it on offense, we are at our best,” he said. “There were stretches in the second and third quarter where our ball movement was outstanding. We just need to do it more often and become more consistent at it, and it’s something we can continue to work on as the season progresses.”
Brandon Valley took control of the game from the start, posting 18-9 and 35-20 scores at the first-half quarter breaks. The Lynx poured in 18 points in the third and just five in the fourth, while the Arrows put up a combined 18 points in the second half.
The junior duo of Danica Kocer and Trinity Law netted 16 and 13 points, respectively. Hannah Behrens and Hailey Pieper both dropped in seven for the Lynx.
For Watertown, Anni Cummings scored nine, Jackie Tetzlaff had seven, and Meghan Heggelund and Megan Fannin both had six.
Brandon Valley had an obvious advantage on the boards, 31-17, and the effort was led by Behrens and Ashley Wells with seven apiece, and Law, who grabbed five.
Law and Behrens each accounted for a pair of the team’s eight total assists. BV had nine steals in the game, of which Sam Taylor and Law each had three.
The Lynx had 16 turnovers to Watertown’s 20.
Stadem says his team heads into a difficult stretch of their schedule that included Tuesday’s road game at Sioux Falls Washington, Friday’s trip to Aberdeen Central and their upcoming Jan. 2 game at Harrisburg. But the schedule, he adds, should pay dividends.
“It will be a great opportunity for this team to really see where we are,” he said.
