The Lynx knew going into last week’s heads-up match against Huron that the Tigers would fight hard.
And Brandon Valley was down three starters.
Despite being short-handed, the Lynx brought a determined fight to the Huron mats and came away with a 40-24 victory in the Dec. 20 road dual.
The match of the night featured BV’s Isaac Klinkhammer and returning state finalist Chipper Shillingstad.
Klinkhammer is the defending state champion in the 132-pound weight division, whose older brother, Creighton, a state finalist and 2018 Brandon Valley grad, went up against Shillingstad a number of times throughout his prep career.
“It was interesting seeing the rivalry pass down to Isaac now,” noted BV head coach Derek Outland.
Klinkhammer scored a penalty point against Shillingstad (on a slam call), a three point near-fall (where he came close to getting the pin) and an escape, to give him the 5-0 decision and keep his 2018-19 season mark unblemished.
Another highlight from Thursday’s dual was watching BV’s Dominic Tucker bump all the way up to wrestle in the 195-pound class.
“He was giving up 20 pounds to his opponent, but still managed to win a 4-2 decision that helped to seal the win for us,” Outland said.
The Lynx were considered to be one of four top 10 teams in Class A who competed in the 44th annual Floyd Farrand Invitational wrestling tournament Dec. 22 at Sioux Falls Lincoln.
BV was No. 4 heading into the meet, which included No. 3 Watertown, No. 6 Sturgis and No. 9 Brookings.
