BVHS freshman Marie Pelletier came away from the Oct. 8-9 state tournament as the flight 4 runner-up. As a team, the Lynx brought home fifth place.

Big things come in small packages, and that surely sums up Marie Pelletier’s performance at the Oct. 8-9 Class AA state tournament. Pelletier, a sophomore was the second Lady Lynx in program history to play for a flight title. After scorching her first three opponents, including No. 1 seed Josie Smith of O’Gorman, she positioned herself for a run at the flight 4 title against Lincoln’s Avery Blackman, which was unchartered territory for Pelletier.
“Marie fought off nerves and a feisty opponent for two sets before ultimately succumbing in the final set,” Brandon Valley coach Adam Rothenberger said. “She certainly had the best singles tournament of our entire team.”
Blackman defeated Pelletier 6-4, 6-7(8).
Pelletier also had a hand in one of BV’s two, fifth places alongside her flight 2 doubles partner, Michaela Jerke. The duo defeated their first opponent before losing 7-5, 7-5 to O’Gorman’s S. Breit and A. Garry. BV’s flight 4 doubles rebounded with a 10-4 win over St. Thomas More’s At. Franciliso and K. Schmahl, earning them the right to play for the consolation title where they Lynx delivered a 10-4 blow to Aberdeen Central’s C. Cornstock and E. Ringgenberg, also by a 10-4 margin.
Jerke also capped off the 2020 season with some notable success. The Lynx sophomore capitalized on her 6-1, 6-4 victory over Josie Heyn of Watertown before losing 6-4, 6-3 to Lincoln’s Ava Leonard. With a bye, a win and a loss on her flight 2 singles resume, Jerke battled O’G’s Sydney Breit in the 10-7 loss to place fourth in the division.
Addy Jackson captured third place in flight 3 singles. The Lady Lynx senior overcame O’G’s Ashlynn Garry 6-3, 6-1 to start, then lost an extended match to Rapid City Stevens’ Anna Mueller, 6-3, 6-7 (10), 6-4. That set the stage for Jackson’s 10-5 win against Harrisburg’s Emily Hanson for third place.
Senior Bella Schultz capped off her prep career with a trio of wins and two losses. She penciled victories over STM’s Katelyn Denholm, Skylar Ness of Brookings and Harrisburg’s Emma Rangel. Her two losses came against Avery Summers of Sioux Falls Roosevelt and O’G’s Maya Jamous, the latter which came in the consolation finals.
“For the singles tournament, Addy, Michaela and Bella all finished where they were supposed to finish,” Rothenberger said. “Addy played an amazing semifinal match with Anna Mueller, who only had one loss on the season and Bella, in her quarterfinal match with Avery Summers, played her best match of the entire season and almost got the upset out of it.”
BV’s flight 3 doubles team also carved out a consolation title. Adriauna Alexander and Kenzie Polasky teamed up to win four out of five matches. In the fifth-place match, the Lady Lynx duo ousted Aberdeen Centrals’ L. Douglas and J. Orr 10-4.
“Our doubles teams had great draws that I felt confident we could upset some teams, and they made great efforts though we didn’t get the upsets we needed to finish higher in the standings,” Rothenberger said, noting BV’s 2 and 3 doubles both placed higher than their respective seedings, which was “a great way for those teams to finish their seasons.”
“This group certainly had the capabilities of out-performing going into the tournament and they didn’t disappoint,” the coach said. “They leaned heavy on the amazing senior leadership from Bella, Addy and Kenzie throughout the season and during the tournament, and so we will miss them greatly next year.”
