Brandon Valley had a mixed bag of results in volleyball action last week, generating a road win at O’Gorman, taking Watertown to five sets, and a 3-0 setback by Huron.
“We had a pretty successful week,” said BV head coach Dacia Boehrns. “We’ve been working hard in practice to put those things together.”
On Saturday, the Lady Lynx got off to a positive start against the Arrows, posting back-to-back 31-29 and 25-21 set victories, before succumbing to the visitors in the next three, 19-25, 18-25, 10-15.
Boehrns said Watertown improved their passing in the third set and the Lady Lynx were playing “back on our heels more.”
“I don’t know if we mentally thought we could take it to five,” she said. “It’s a mental mindset that we have to work through.”
BV’s net attack was led by Paige Timmons, who recorded 27 kills. Macyn Flanigan aided with six; she also had four ace serves to her credit. Ella Simonson provided 23 digs; Anna Reinschmidt had a dozen. Avery Myers was kept busy, putting up 65 set assists. Jadah Tschetter also had five blocks in the five-set match.
BV 3, O’G 2
Boehrns described BV’s 3-2 road win at O’Gorman as “really exciting.”
‘It’s always fun to beat a Sioux Falls school and with O’Gorman and where they’re sitting at in the standings, it was a huge confidence booster for us,” she said.
Despite the first set going O’G’s way, 25-19, the Lynx rebounded in sets two and three, registering 25-20 wins in both, before the Knights capitalized on the 25-15 fourth set. BV squeaked out the match-deciding fifth set, 15-13.
“After the first set didn’t go our way, we refocused and I just knew we had been working so hard on things in practice, I knew my team was there and they started putting things together on the court,’ she said.
Timmons and Megan Stettnichs provided the firepower at the net, producing 19 and 10 kills, respectively. Timmons also had a trio of blocks to her credit. Once again, Myers was kept busy, putting up 81 set assists. The backrow play was led by Simonson and Brooke Lunstra, who had 15 and 12 digs, respectively. Simonson also had a pair of ace serves.
BV 0, Huron 3
Huron’s firepower at the net – largely led by Hollee Niehus’ 20 kills – was the dagger that ultimately dealt the Lady Lynx a 3-0 road loss Sept. 26. The Tigers won 25-21, 25-18, 25-17.
The Lady Lynx were led in their net attack by Timmons and Flanigan, who registered seven and five kills, respectively. Timmons also produced five digs and a pair of blocks. Simonson had five digs and a trio of ace serves. Tschetter had a hand on two blocks and Myers was credited with 15 set assists.
For Huron (7-5), Havyn Heinz had 25 digs, while Kylie Overbay and Tenley Buddenhagen had 14 and 12 assists, respectively.
Niehus also had eight digs and three blocks to her credit. Isabel delivered five ace serves and Kayla Schmike had six kills.
Following Tuesday’s road match at Yankton, the Lady Lynx travel to Pierre on Saturday.
“Yankton and Pierre will both be good tests for us, and what we’ve been working on should help us get a couple of wins this week,” Boehrns said.
