Area youth to represent SVE in Washington, D.C.
Sioux Valley Energy recently selected two students to represent the Cooperative in Washington D.C. during the National Rural Electric Youth Tour in June. Austen King, a junior at Sioux Valley High School and Allison LaRock, a sophomore at Hills-Beaver Creek (Minn.) High School were chosen as the representatives. King is the son of Keith King and Candice Petersen. LaRock is the daughter of Dan and Marie LaRock.
“Participating in the Youth Tour is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for future leaders such as Austen and Allison. I have no doubt they will not only learn more about the history of this great nation but also develop leadership skills, network with other students and gain an understanding of the importance of the political process to electric cooperatives,” said Tim McCarthy, SVE CEO/general manager.
More than 1,500 students from across the United States take part in the Youth Tour experience each year. The opportunity allows students to learn more about electric cooperatives. They will also visit Mount Vernon, Library of Congress, Vietnam War Memorial, U.S. Supreme Court, Arlington National Cemetery, Ford’s Theatre, Washington Monument and many other DC sites. Youth Tour representatives will also meet with South Dakota and Minnesota’s congressional delegation at the U.S. Capitol.
King and LaRock were both chosen from a group of students who take part in Sioux Valley Energy’s EmPOWER Youth Leadership program.
