Health issues has led Ward 3 Alderman Roger Brooks to step down from Brandon City Council.
Brooks, 74, sustained a subdural hematoma after losing his footing while doing yardwork at his home earlier this year. He was admitted Nov. 2 to Sanford Health and his recovery included in-patient physical, speech and occupational therapy.
In a Nov. 15 Journal report, his wife, Mary, said he was dealing with some memory loss due to the injury.
“Roger Brooks and his wife, Mary, have served on the council for numerous, numerous, numerous years,” Mayor Larry Beesley said. “Mr. Brooks is a valued member of this council – and a friend.”
Brooks was the council vice president and the council rep on the planning and zoning commission. Beesley will appoint a council member to fill his planning and zoning assignment.
Beesley is also tasked with appointing Brooks’ Ward 3 replacement and asks for interested Ward 3 residents to apply. The application is available at City Hall, on the city website or may be emailed by request.
The mayor will announce his appointment at the council’s Jan. 15 meeting. The temporary term is through the first meeting in May.
Any Ward 3 resident interested in serving the remaining two years (April 2018-April 2020) of the term must file a nomination petition. If more than one petition is filed, the Ward 3 council rep will be decided in the general election by Ward 3 registered voters only.
