Staff report

On the recommendation from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Brandon Police are warning local residents of scammers using the COVID-19 pandemic to steal money, personal information or both.

Law enforcement encourage residents to do their research before clicking on links purporting to provide information on the virus, donating to a charity online or through social media, contributing to a crowdfunding campaign; purchasing products online, or sharing personal information to receive money or other benefits.

The FBI advises the public to be on the lookout for the following:

• Fake CDC e-mails

• Phishing e-mails

• Counterfeit treatments or equipment

For the most accurate and up-to-date information on COVID-19, the Centers for Disease Center has posted extensive guidance and information. The best sources for authoritative information on
COVID-19 are www.cdc.gov and www.coronavirus.gov.
