Staff report

The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Sioux Empire (BGCSE) afterschool programs will celebrate the importance of afterschool programs with a Lights On Afterschool rally at 3:45 p.m. Thursday.

The rally, one of more than 8,000 such events nationwide, is a part of the annual Lights On Afterschool awareness event, organized by the Afterschool Alliance. Special guests in Sioux Falls, Harrisburg and Brandon will call for expanding afterschool opportunities to ensure every child who needs a program has access to one.

Additionally, these civil and school leaders will discuss the benefits of afterschool programs, including inspiring children to learn, providing educationally enriching activities to bridge the gap between school and home, keeping them safe in the sometimes-perilous afternoon hours, and relieving working families of worries about their children’s activities in the afternoon.

BGCSE, which serves more than 750 students, will host nine rallies simultaneously in Sioux Falls, Brandon and Harrisburg centers and schools.

The event will spotlight the range of programming available at the Club including its curriculum focused STEAM, physical recreation, reading, writing and character and leadership. Many parents, supporters, volunteers and community members are expected to attend the various rallies and a free community dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. at the Club location, 700 S. Sneve Ave., Sioux Falls, and will feature produce harvested from the Club’s garden. Parents, students and community members are encouraged to attend.
