B&GC offering ‘Back to Summer’ programming at Brandon schools

For parents perusing options for local childcare this summer, the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Sioux Empire are offering a historical twist on the typical daycare experience for area families.
“Back to Summer” is the theme of the B&GC’s annual summer programming this year, which will be available for children in grades K-6 Monday through Friday at Brandon Elementary and Fred Assam Elementary.
In addition to a summer full of swimming and typical field trips, the B&GC’s “Back to Summer” program will include themed curriculum that will take children through the ages, from ancient Egypt and the colonial days to the Industrial Revolution and the Experience Age (a.k.a. modern times).
“The goal is to have a fun way to prevent that summer learning loss, with staff catered to each age group’s individual needs,” said Caitlin Rothscadl, Ignite director for the B&GC.
For the first time, B&GC’s summer childcare will offer split programming, allowing kids to have curriculum and activities more closely tailored to their interests and academic levels.
“We know kids learn best when they’re with their peers. For the older kids, we’re making a more concerted effort, so it feels more like a camp atmosphere,” explained marketing director Lisa Verdin. “For sixth-graders, where childcare may be questionable, we’re keeping them engaged in new ways that are very specific as opposed to kindergartners, who are just coming off of naps.”
Older age groups will take more field trips this summer, too.
“Summer is all about hands-on and fun, while still setting them up for success in the fall,” Verdin added. “Brandon has been very generous with us at the schools. At Fred Assam, we’ll have access to the art room, the gymnasium and the computer lab, and that really gives us the ability to cater to different age groups.”
Spots are still available at both Brandon locations, Rothscadl said, but they’re filling quickly.
“Back to Summer” care hours are 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Full-time tuition (four or five days per week) is $125 per week, and part-time (one to three days) is $98 per week. A nonrefundable registration fee of $35 is required for each child.
B&GC also offers summer programming at its 14th Street location in Sioux Falls and two locations in Harrisburg.
