Ask the Anytime Gal: Tips to reduce tummy fat

Question: How can I reduce stomach fat and get “six-pack” abs?
Answer: Ahh, this is a question I get ALL the time as a trainer. The fitness industry has made it seem easy to do a few crunches and BAM – a sixpack! Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Very few people can actually achieve the look of defined abs and to do so takes much determination and careful decision making when it comes to your eating habits. This is because our rectus abdominis – the muscle that makes the stomach look defined – is covered by fat. The truth is, it’s very unrealistic for people to have a body fat percentage low enough to actually see these muscles. You can work your abs all you want – and it’s not a bad idea to do so, as core strength is important, but if you have a layer of fat over them the “six-pack” can’t be seen. The best thing you can do is work hard to better define your midsection by reducing overall body fat. So, ditch the endless crunches for some cardio and pay attention to the nutrients you’re feeding your body with. The lower your body fat is the more visible the abs will be!
