Finding the perfect gifts for those special people on your Christmas gift list might be as easy as “shopping small.”
And from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday in Brandon, 18 local businesses will have their doors open offering a wide range of holiday deals and friendly hometown service.
“Some of our participating businesses have said it’s their best sales day of the year,” noted Kim Cerwick, CEO/president of the Brandon Valley Area Chamber of Commerce.
As a registered “Neighborhood Champion” of Shop Small Saturday, the Brandon Chamber works to promote the American Express-supported event locally.
“Shop Small Saturday has become a holiday shopping tradition in Brandon,” Cerwick said, “and it is showcasing that we do have great retail businesses out here.”
In 2010, American Express launched “Shop Small Saturday” the Saturday after Thanksgiving, hoping to bring more shopping to small businesses nationwide. One year later, the United States Senate unanimously passed a resolution in support of Small Business Saturday, and by 2012, officials in all 50 states participated.
Last year, it is estimated, 112 million shoppers spent $15.4 billion at small businesses, as reported in the 2016 Small Business Saturday Consumer Insights Survey. Shoppers are showing up in record numbers, each year greater than the last, according to its website.
In addition to in-store deals, Santa Claus will be making stops at two local businesses. The jolly ol’ elf will be at The First National Bank in Sioux Falls-Brandon Branch from 10 a.m. to noon. He’ll also be at Oakridge Nursery & Landscaping from 10 a.m. until noon and again from 1 to 3 p.m. Cameras are encouraged.
Merchants participating in Shop Small Saturday this year are The 1948 Trading Company, Taco John’s of Brandon, Brandon Pharmacy, Pizza Ranch of Brandon, Brandon 1st Stop, Oak Ridge Nursery & Landscaping, Boen & Associates, Sunshine Foods, Brandon ACE Hardware, Divine Treasures Boutique, Gypsy Trading Co., First National Bank, Born Again Spaces, Beautique, The Warehouse, The Paisely Pod, Scooter’s Coffee and Shindigs.
“At beautique, it’s always fun to see the line of people out the door waiting to get their free swag bag,” Cerwick said.
A Christmas Lights Parade has capped off Shop Small Saturday in Brandon in recent years, but the on-again, off-again event will not take place this year.
“The parade has not been a Chamber event, but we’ve always supported it,” Cerwick said. “In our old location, we were always happy to welcome people into the Chamber office for cider and cookies. The hard part of a parade here is that we can’t plans for the weather, and along Holly Boulevard there is no coverage, so it’s a tough event to plan.”
